For many Horizon families, the PTA can be confusing. Consider this a quick tutorial to help you understand how the PTA works.
The PTA consists of any parent, school staff member, or friend who registers to be a member of the Horizon PTA and who pays the yearly $10 individual or $12 family membership fee. You can register to become a PTA member on this website or through the PTA store located on My School Anywhere.
PTA is a volunteer organization that seeks to unite home, school, and community in promoting the education, health and safety of children, youth and families. Horizon's PTA is chartered under the Kansas PTA, which is in turn chartered under the National PTA.
THe PTA BOARD
The PTA Board is made up of four elected officers: the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Two teacher representatives also serve on the board. The current board members are listed in the Who We Are drop down menu above.
There are many, many PTA volunteers in addition to the eight board members. It is these devoted parents, family members, and friends who make it all happen! The board members organize and plan the various PTA-sponsored events, fundraisers and activities. Volunteers carry out all the tasks that make those events happen. Some volunteer opportunities have official sign ups, such as Haunted Horizon and Teacher Pie Donations. Other types of activities you need only notify one of the PTA board members that you're interested in serving in that capacity. Whether you have a lot of time to give or a little, there is a volunteer opportunity for you!
Some of the volunteer opportunities are listed under the Who We Are drop down menu above. If you are interested in any of these contact one of the PTA board members. If you are interested in volunteering at a school event watch for notices seeking volunteers for those events in the weekly school newsletter, on PTA's Facebook page, and in PTA emails.
All four officers, the teacher representatives, and the principal attend the PTA meetings. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month. Meeting dates are listed on the PTA website's home page and under Calendar & Events. Meetings cover the PTA budget, fundraising, the planning and organization of events, committee and chair reports, the distribution of PTA grant money to teachers, and the planning of the PTA calendar.
Elections for PTA board positions are held every spring at one of the regularly scheduled PTA meetings. When the date for elections draws near a notice seeking nominations for PTA board positions is posted on PTA's Facebook page, webpage, and/or the school's newsletter. If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else for a board position, or if you are interested in volunteering for PTA in any other role, you may do so by contacting any of the PTA board officers. You can reach them through this website under the Contact Us drop down menu above. You may also contact any of the PTA board members through the school directory once you are signed up for the directory.
